Snapped Key in the Lock? Birmingham's Same-Day Extraction Locksmith

A key snapping in a lock is one of the most common call-outs we handle across Birmingham. It usually happens when a cylinder is worn, when someone forces a sticking lock, or when a very old or poorly-cut key finally gives way. The broken section is often still inside the cylinder — and trying to fish it out with tweezers or superglue nearly always makes it worse.

Our locksmiths extract snapped keys cleanly, from most UK cylinder types — Euro cylinders on uPVC doors, mortice locks on wooden doors, nightlatches, and rim locks. Where the cylinder is salvageable we cut a new key from the existing profile; where it isn't, we replace the cylinder on site with a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade and leave you with two freshly cut keys.

Why Keys Snap in Birmingham Homes (and Why It's Not Your Fault)

Snapping is almost always a symptom of an underlying problem — not the key's fault:

  • Misaligned uPVC door. If the door has dropped on its hinges, the multi-point gearbox isn't meeting the keeps cleanly, and the key is under excess torque every time you lock or unlock. See our uPVC door repair service — realigning takes about an hour and stops snaps from happening again.
  • Worn Euro cylinder. Older cylinders develop internal wear; the key has to wiggle to line up, and any twist against a sticking point breaks it.
  • Cheap "anti-snap" cylinder that isn't actually tested. Look for TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond markings on any replacement you buy — generic online "anti-snap" cylinders often underperform.
  • Frozen lock. In winter, water that's entered the cylinder expands and locks the pins. A thin layer of graphite powder (never WD-40) keeps cylinders moving smoothly.

How We Remove a Snapped Key Without Drilling

  1. Diagnose. We identify the lock type (Euro, mortice, nightlatch, rim) and assess how much of the key broke off and in what orientation.
  2. Non-destructive extraction. Using key-extractor tools, broken-key pullers, or slim-line manipulation, we pull the blade out of the pin chamber. Most extractions take under 15 minutes.
  3. Test the cylinder. If the cylinder still operates smoothly and safely, we cut a fresh key from the profile and you're done.
  4. Replace if necessary. If the extraction revealed wear, damage or a failing cylinder, we fit a replacement on the spot — usually a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade — and cut two keys.

Drilling the cylinder is a last resort. We only do it when the internal pin stack has collapsed or the blade is wedged beyond extraction — and we'll always explain the reason before any drill goes near your door.
