Locked Out? 7 Things to Try Before You Call a Locksmith

Standing on your doorstep without a key is stressful, but rushing rarely helps. Before you reach for the phone, there are several safe, sensible things worth trying. Many lockouts are solved in a few minutes without any damage or expense. Here are seven to work through calmly.

1. Check every other door and window

It sounds obvious, but back doors, side gates, patio doors and ground-floor windows are often left unlocked. Walk the full perimeter before assuming you are stuck.

2. Find out who else has a key

A partner, housemate, neighbour, parent or trusted friend may hold a spare. A quick call could save you a callout entirely. If you let a property, your landlord or agent may also hold one.

3. Make sure the door is actually locked, not just stuck

uPVC doors in particular can jam when the multipoint mechanism is misaligned. Try lifting the handle fully while gently pushing or pulling the door, then turning the key. Swollen timber doors in damp weather can stick too. Never force it, as this can damage the gearbox.

4. Check whether the key snapped

If part of your key broke off in the lock, do not push the remaining piece in further or jam in another key. That can wedge the broken section deeper. This needs proper snapped key extraction rather than DIY.

5. Look for a key safe or smart entry

If you have a key safe, smart lock app or a keypad, now is the time to remember the code. Reset a smart lock from your phone if the app is still logged in.

6. Avoid the "card in the door" and crowbar myths

Online videos showing a bank card slipping a latch only work on simple spring latches with no deadlock, and they often snap the card or scratch the door. Prying with screwdrivers or crowbars damages frames and can void insurance. The damage usually costs far more than a locksmith would have.

  • Do not break a window unless there is a genuine emergency inside, such as a child, vulnerable person or something on the hob.
  • Do not climb through upstairs windows. Falls are a real risk and not worth it.

7. Call a professional and stay safe while you wait

If none of the above works, a skilled locksmith can usually open a standard door non-destructively, meaning no broken locks and no replacement bill. While you wait, stay somewhere warm and safe, and have ID ready to prove you live there. If you are stuck outside, our team handles lockouts across Birmingham day and night, and most jobs are opened without drilling.

Prevent the next lockout

Once you are back inside, leave a spare with someone trusted, consider a quality key safe, and check uPVC doors are aligned so the handle lifts smoothly. A little prevention saves a lot of doorstep stress.
