Lost Your House Keys? Rekey vs Replace - What to Do

Losing your house keys is unsettling, especially if they could fall into the wrong hands. The good news is you usually have two solid options: rekeying the existing locks or replacing them. Knowing the difference helps you make a fast, sensible decision and avoid overpaying.

First, assess the real risk

Before doing anything, think about how exposed you are:

  • Were the keys labelled with your address, or lost near home?
  • Was anything else lost with them, such as a wallet showing where you live?
  • Could someone who knows you have taken them?

If there is any chance the keys can be linked to your address, treat your locks as compromised and act promptly. If you simply mislaid keys inside the house, the urgency is lower.

What rekeying means

Rekeying changes the internal pins or, on a Euro cylinder, swaps the cylinder so the old key no longer works while the lock body stays in place. It is quick and cost-effective, and ideal when the lock itself is in good condition and meets standards. On many uPVC and composite doors, simply replacing the Euro cylinder is the modern equivalent of rekeying.

What replacing means

Replacing fits an entirely new lock. This is the right call when:

  1. The lock is old, worn or not to British Standard (BS3621 on timber, or a TS007 3-star / SS312 Diamond anti-snap cylinder on uPVC).
  2. The mechanism is stiff, sticking or has already partly failed.
  3. You want to upgrade security at the same time, which is a sensible moment to do it.

Rekey or replace: a quick comparison

  • Rekey/recylinder: Cheaper, faster, keeps a good lock. Best when the existing hardware is already up to standard.
  • Replace: Costs a little more but lets you upgrade to anti-snap and British Standard hardware in one visit.

For most people who lose keys with an older lock, replacement is the more reassuring choice because you gain better protection. If your locks are already modern and compliant, a recylinder is plenty.

Do not forget the other doors

If your lost keyring included keys to the back door, garage, shed or a communal entrance, those need attention too. A single forgotten back-door key leaves the whole strategy undermined.

Practical next steps

  • Secure the property with bolts or chains until the work is done.
  • List every lock the keys opened so nothing is missed.
  • Decide rekey vs replace per door based on condition and standards.
  • Consider keyed-alike cylinders so one new key fits multiple doors.

Our engineers can recylinder a good door or carry out a full lock replacement and installation with genuine anti-snap cylinders, and advise honestly on which you actually need. You can check typical costs on our locksmith prices page before booking.
